The EICMA, the world motorcycling exhibition, was held in MILAN from 19 to 22 November. The event was an important opportunity to introduce all kinds of new developments in the world of motorcycling.

In order to mark the occasion, the companyPolini introduced a “special” gold project. A Vespa covered entirely with 500 sheets of pure 23 carat gold leaf. The company from Alzano Lombardo, which has been renowned for its passion for motorcycles and the world of mechanics since the 1950s, decided to create a one-of-a-kind business that would attract all kinds of visitors.

The idea of customizing a Vespa 50 Special in gold leaf was conceived by Simon Polini, one of the proprietors of the historic Manufacturer of the famous Vespa 50 and Vespa 50 Special, when he received a pair of eyeglasses with elements decorated in gold leaf as a gift.

One of the project’s most difficult stages, once the gold leaf had been applied to the Vespa 50 Special, was to protect the the gold leaf plating in an optimal manner. That’s when Polini came up with the idea of creating a wooden structure that would allow the Vespa to be transported to the body shop before being coated, thus allowing the gold leaf plating to be kept intact.

Polini thus made an original tribute to a scooter that immediately became an icon throughout the motoring industry: in fact, the 23 carat gold Vespa 50 Special immediately drew a crowd at EICMA 2015.

The gold leaf plated Vespa is considered to be one of the most “precious” customizations that has ever made to this iconic scooter by multiple generations of enthusiasts.
