Gold leaf in contemporary interior decoration

The gold effect in interior design is not simply a trendy style, rather it represents an timeless aesthetic. This is possible thanks to a very precious peculiarity that only gold and a few other materials possess: a quality we call expressive versatility. Gold, in fact, has the ability to change its meaning in various contexts and combinations, this is because throughout history it has been attributed consistently new “roles”.

In ancient Egypt, as in sacred religious texts, gold represented the divine world; probably because its colour cannot be faithfully reproduced, symbolizing an unattainable dimension: only gold leaf is gold!

Over time, gold leaf has become an icon of wealth, redundancy, abundance, in a word: Baroque.

Today, in contemporary design, gold leaf is given the task of illuminating rooms, adding highlights, pathos, a touch of originality, and of course elegance. And needless to say, preciousness remains a constant.

Gold leaf in interior design: possible applications

From a particularly iconic piece of furniture to an entire wall: gold leaf can cover any surface, meeting a variety of decorative objectives.

Among the most popular stylistic choices today, the use of wallpaper stands out: the patterns are

infinite as well as a room’s aesthetic result! Many artists choose to add gold leaf in their design, as we said, with different objectives:

  • in an antique-style decoration, gold leaf adds solemnity and preciousness
  • on a with a more geometric surface, on the other hand, this metal is the element of inspiration and exuberance that softens the overall rigour of the design.

What if gold leaf covered furniture? A sumptuous mirror placed at the entrance of a flat is one of the most popular aesthetic choices: beautiful, elegant and rich in itself. What more could one possibly add? Or as a finish: gold leaf is quite often used to embellish cupboards, cabinets, tables; to enhance particular carvings, such as sinuous and irregular ends, adding delicacy.

However, those who wish to go further can be inspired by contemporary designers, who love to customise an environment’s indispensable architectural elements.

Although open spaces have become trendy, a door for example, remains a fundamental element of space. Decorators choose to interpret it in two opposite ways: camouflage it, by painting it in the same colour as the walls, or make it even more evident, an actual element of prominence and personality. This is the case with doors covered in gold leaf: it is impossible not to notice them, but that’s precisely the point!

Also iconic coffee tables and picture frames: gold leaf finishes have no limits.

Our gold for interior design around the world

We at Giusto Manetti Battiloro have a long history in furnishings. Over the years, our gold leaf has been interpreted by architects and designers to decorate a wide variety of environments. As previously mentioned, gold leaf is very expressive and the meanings it conveys are countless!

The most well-known, wealth: our gold was used to cover the entrance of the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, and is used in numerous restoration projects, including the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi: the objective is to consistently create enchanting, precious, abundant and memorable environments.

In London, on the other hand, we are the protagonists of the decor of the Beauford Bar, at the Hotel Savoy, for a

renovation with a retro feel and typical British charm. Elegance is also central to the Remisens Premium Hotel Palace, in Croatia and in Italian interior design projects that have made numerous environments, such as living rooms and bathrooms, iconic.

We’ve collected the most beautiful projects here.

Carats and colours: the aesthetic versatility of gold

We tend to believe that gold leaf has only one colour, yet the most precious metal in the world is expressed in many shades and carats, offering innumerable aesthetic solutions suitable for countless design styles.

Among these, we’d like to highlight the recent renovation of a contemporary-style home where our platinum leaf covered the entirediningroom ceiling for a truly spectacular “surprise effect”.

From a ceiling, we move on to a smaller but still very captivating surface: a mirror covered with champagne gold leaf, which added a much more precious and evocative meaning to its reflective function.

As mentioned earlier, gold leaf is used to cover frames and embellish the mostprecious works of art, but what if gold itself were the true artistic protagonist of the room? This is exactly what happened in this particularly original project where our 24kt pure gold leaf becamethe “painting” to be framed and exhibited.

Gold truly knows no aesthetic limits: trends change, as do the way it is applied, yet gold leaf remains a timeless stylistic choice.

A stylistic choice, however, that must be applied with knowledge and care: as centuries-old producers of gold leaf, this is a foresight that we always emphasize.
