Washington, September 2014 – Following a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Virginia in 2011, the golden surfaces of the ceilings at Union Station appeared scaled, oxidised and furrowed by long cracks.
Major restoration work was therefore necessary, requiring hundreds of triangular and octagonal boxes positioned along the station’s main corridor to be re-gilded.
Produced by Giusto Manetti Battiloro and manually applied by specialised local craftsmen, more than 12 thousand 23kt gold leaves were used to restore the building to its original splendour.
